Feedback We Have Received

Chuck has received quite a lot of nice feedback from participants in the courses he's taught over the years. Here's a sampling:

The following three quotes contain unsolicited feedback sent via email to a customer's [large aerospace company] management after a group of approximately 60 SEPG member candidates had completed training.

Quote 1

"I would like to say how much I appreciate being in the SEPG Training Class and how it will increase my contribution to [company]. Many of us are accomplished in technical fields, but need improvement in our process improvement, in personal] relationships, and personal effectiveness skills.

"The SEPG class has taught me about about the SEI/CMM process improvement framework, methods and specific steps to take, not only in my own work, but in facilitating these changes in my Section, Unit, Organization and work group. The instructional techniques combining lecture, group and partner work to solve problems. Thought-provoking homework assignments and testing ensures each member of the class is engaged and dedicated to learning. Not only do we learn the techniques and idea behind the CMM model, but the attitudes we must take into our organizations are also taught. We are making optimum use of our time of learning and the time of the instructors and support staff with these methods.

"It is not an overstatement that the teaching of Chuck Myers is truly a life changing experience. Chuck is soft-spoken and unassuming, but the sections he teaches ... summarizes a huge body of work and packs it into 5 amazing sessions. We took home his succinct course notes, exercise materials which require personal reflection, and many books which he provides... He combines lecture, amusing video clips from movies, group and partner work, and homework assignments, and self examination to create an effective learning experience for us fortunate students.

"I only hope I can return to [company] what it has given to me in this experience."

Quote 2

"I was delighted with Chuck Myers class. I found it helpful in improving my listening and negotiating skills. (When you list these skills, they look small, but they’re quite a large communication problem.)

"The 2-day format was too short for this class. The exercises were OK, but could have been expanded. The material was excellent, but they went by too fast.

"Thanks for this very useful class."

Quote 3

"I would like to mention that I think these exercises are excellent. They cause me to review the class material and exercises and think of how to apply them to my SEPG and other work situations. I think this style of exercise is better than the “memorize principles” method of ensuring the full participation in the learning experience. The real use of the learning is to be able to understand and apply the principles and techniques. Completing exercises of this type is a way of evaluating whether we have done that as well as being useful to the student."

An email exchange with a course participant after completing a series of courses:

From the Participant

"Chuck, I really enjoyed the four training sessions you provided at [company]. I gave glowing recommendations to [manager] and staff about their utility in my daily work… I was most delighted by the fourth and final class on consulting. It wrapped up all of the classes into a coherent whole.

"I hope we'll see you again at [company].  The course series is valuable and we would greatly benefit from repeat performances!"

In Reply

"Thanks very much for your feedback.  I appreciate your taking the time to compose and send it to me. Would you mind if I showed the content of your message to potential clients?"

From the Participant

"Fine by me.  I am indebtd to you, I'm sure we're all indebted to you, and it needn't be kept private!   Feel free to share it verbatim on a person-to-person basis. I'm not a [company] spokesperson who watches his words; I'm just an appreciative student who says what he thinks."

Email from another course participant:

"Chuck,

[personal greetings omitted]

"You know you've learned something when you can see yourself adjusting your behavior to others. As such, I'm more cognizant of my "listening" and "speaking" skills when dealing with others (e.g. co-workers, my kids). And I'm already trying hard to apply the skills learned in class to my activities here.

"As a matter of fact, I went out to the local B&N and bought the "Kids will Listen" book. I've read the first chapter and I'm attempting to apply those learnings first before moving on. Judy (my wife) is also interested in reading the book.

"I also have to thank you for giving a bit more of yourself to the class. The additional insights you shared with us were well worth the investment of my time."

The previous quotes have been from U.S.-based participants. Here is a portion of another email, this one from Europe:

"I used some of the empathy techniques from your course very successfully with our administration and turned a very difficult working relationship in[to] an easy-going one by showing understanding for the chaos this person was in. Since this very personal communication, the working relationship has changed completely."
